someone wanna help me out??? cosmetic thing?? accessory thing? function?

im a hunter and the AR vocab isnt exactly common lingo

Free floating a rifle barrel (bolt or auto) tends to increase accuracy (reduce group sizes), by allowing the barrel to vibrate freely without impingement of the stock. It also helps reduce or eliminate the tendency for the bullets POI (point of impact) to drift, or "walk" when the barrel heats up.

ok so it controls the barrel without controlling it so much that it affects performance? what about all the numbers and stuff on the panels?

**usually those high dollar bolt action rifles or competition types are free floated barrels....seems a bit much for an AR. Unless it's set up for long range gopher hunting.
is this an alternative to the kinda "black bulb" looking thing that typically goes there or is that something completely different?

No, the idea is that it doesn't touch the barrel or its' assembly at all thereby inducing zero effect on POI. Of, course, that is theory; any mass added to a firearm affects POI including the shooter.
